The Amachi Program is a faith-based segment of the broader Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. The Amachi program serves children of incarcerated parents by matching girls and boys with volunteer mentors from participating church congregations. Studies have shown mentoring of at-risk children results in children with higher self-esteem, who perform better in school and who are less likely to use illegal drugs, skip school, or use alcohol. Since 2000, more than 15,000 children have been matched with church-based mentors across 25 communities. |
